Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure 2: Alternative Fuels

Opens:
26.03.2026
Closes:
16.09.2026
Sectors:
Marine and Maritime Research
Energy
Project Size:
Up to £150 million

The Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure 2: Alternative Fuels competition forms part of the UK SHORE programme, which aims to position the UK as a global leader in clean maritime technologies. This funding opportunity supports the development, deployment and real-world demonstration of innovative alternative fuel solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the maritime sector.

Projects must demonstrate technologies in operational environments over a three-year period without further grant funding, ensuring both technical feasibility and long-term commercial viability.

What your project must deliver

This competition is designed for ambitious, large-scale projects that can demonstrate real impact and scalability within the maritime sector.

Your project must:

  • Develop or retrofit vessels using alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia or methanol
  • Build and deploy port-based refuelling and storage infrastructure
  • Deliver a three-year real-world demonstration of vessels and infrastructure
  • Achieve measurable reductions in well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions
  • Provide a clear and costed route to commercialisation and market adoption

Projects must include relevant end users such as vessel operators and port authorities to ensure solutions are practical, scalable and aligned with industry needs.

Technology focus areas

This strand focuses on alternative fuels that meet strict emissions criteria and can support long-term decarbonisation of maritime transport.

Key areas include:

  • Alternative fuel vessel propulsion systems
  • Hybrid systems combining alternative fuels with electric technologies
  • Onboard fuel cell or combustion systems using low or zero emission fuels
  • Port-based bunkering, refuelling and storage infrastructure
  • Integrated energy systems supporting alternative fuel supply

Eligible fuels must meet strict greenhouse gas intensity thresholds, ensuring alignment with net zero targets and international maritime standards.

Eligibility and consortium requirements

Projects must be collaborative and industry-led, bringing together expertise across the maritime value chain.

Projects must:

  • Be led by a UK registered business
  • Include vessel owners, operators or manufacturers
  • Include infrastructure owners or operators such as ports or harbours

Academic organisations can participate but cannot lead projects. Strong partnerships across technology providers, operators and infrastructure stakeholders will be critical to success.

Key dates

Opens: Thursday 26 March 2026

Closes: Wednesday 16 September 2026 (11:00am UK time)

Project start date: 1 April 2027

Funding amount

Up to £150 million available across the ZEVI 2 programme with projects can request up to £30 million in grant funding.
