The Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) is NATO’s flagship innovation programme, designed to identify and accelerate dual-use technologies that can strengthen defence and security capabilities across the Alliance.

Through an annual challenge-based competition, DIANA seeks innovative technology solutions from companies across NATO member nations. Successful applicants join the DIANA Accelerator Programme, gaining access to funding, mentoring, testing facilities, investors, military end users, and commercial partners.

The programme focuses on helping innovators move from promising technologies towards adoption and deployment within both defence and civilian markets.

 

Key Dates and Funding

Challenge Call Opens: 2nd June 2026

Proposal Submission Deadline: 3 July 2026

Accelerator Programme Start: January 2027

Funding Available:

  • €100,000 contractual funding for companies entering the Accelerator Programme
  • Up to €300,000 additional funding available through the Mission Track
  • Total potential funding of up to €400,000 per company

 

Programme Structure

Stage 1: Challenge Call

Innovators submit proposals addressing one of DIANA's defence and security challenges.

DIANA is looking for:

  • Dual-use technologies
  • Novel and disruptive innovations
  • Solutions addressing critical NATO capability needs
  • Technologies at TRL 4 or above

 

Stage 2: Accelerator Programme

Selected innovators enter the DIANA Accelerator Programme and receive:

  • €100,000 in contractual funding
  • Access to DIANA's international test centre network
  • Mentoring and business support
  • Exposure to defence and commercial stakeholders
  • Opportunities to validate technologies against real-world requirements

Participants continue developing and refining their solutions while working closely with end users.

 

Stage 3: Mission Track

Following a competitive down-selection process, a select number of innovators move into the Mission Track.

Successful participants may receive:

  • Additional funding of up to €300,000
  • Demonstration and validation opportunities
  • Investor engagement support
  • Defence adoption planning
  • Commercial scaling assistance

The Mission Track is specifically designed to accelerate technology transition and deployment.

Areas of Interest

The call is divided into 6 key challenges:

  1. Human survivability
  2. Multidomain autonomy of uncrewed systems
  3. Multidomain sensing and advanced data processing for intelligence and surveillance
  4. Operational resilience in contested environments
  5. Responsive logistics
  6. Scalable and adaptable countermeasures for air defence

 

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants include:

  • Start-ups
  • SMEs
  • Scale-ups
  • Technology companies established within NATO nations

Applicants must:

  • Be legally registered within a NATO country
  • Own or control the proposed technology
  • Demonstrate technology maturity at TRL 4 or above
  • Accept DIANA's programme terms and conditions

Universities and non-profit organisations cannot apply directly, although future collaboration opportunities may be available.
