Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition 7

Opens:
11.03.2026
Closes:
15.07.2026
Sectors:
Marine and Maritime Research
Project Size:
£100,000 to £15 million

The Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition 7 (CMDC7), delivered by Innovate UK and funded by the Department for Transport through the UK SHORE programme, is providing up to £121 million to support innovative clean maritime technologies across the UK. The programme aims to accelerate maritime decarbonisation while strengthening the UK’s position as a global hub for sustainable maritime innovation.

The competition is divided into three complementary strands, allowing organisations to apply based on the maturity and readiness of their technology.

The Three Funding Strands

1. Feasibility Studies

The Feasibility Studies strand supports primarily desk-based technical and economic feasibility studies linked to future deployment of clean maritime technologies. Projects must not involve substantial testing in water environments.

Funding and Project Size

  • Project costs between £100,000 and £1 million
  • Projects can last up to 12 months
  • Must end by 31 March 2028

Suitable Projects

This strand is ideal for organisations exploring:

  • New fuel systems such as hydrogen or ammonia
  • Smart shipping technologies
  • Green shipping corridors
  • Clean maritime skills and training initiatives
  • Shore power or energy efficiency concepts

Projects must demonstrate a pathway to future deployment and commercialisation by December 2029.

2. Pre-deployment Trials

The Pre-deployment Trials strand supports projects that design, develop and test clean maritime technologies before operational deployment. Testing must remain land-based and cannot involve real-world deployment on water.

Funding and Project Size

  • Project costs between £750,000 and £6 million
  • Projects can last up to 12 months
  • Must end by 31 March 2028

Suitable Projects

This strand supports:

  • Prototype development and land-based testing
  • Fuel system validation
  • Shore infrastructure development
  • Digital and autonomous maritime systems
  • Emissions reduction technologies

Projects must demonstrate clear market potential and support future deployment by December 2029.

3. Deployment Trials

The Deployment Trials strand funds real-world demonstrations of innovative clean maritime technologies in operational settings. Projects must develop, test and deploy technologies in live maritime environments.

Funding and Project Size

  • Project costs between £3 million and £15 million
  • Projects can last up to 2 years and 9 months
  • Must end by 31 December 2029

Suitable Projects

Projects may include:

  • Vessel demonstrations at sea
  • Hydrogen, methanol or ammonia-powered vessels
  • Offshore and port infrastructure solutions
  • Smart shipping and digital maritime technologies
  • Carbon capture and emissions reduction systems

Deployment projects must include at least six weeks of operational demonstration in real-world conditions.

Eligible Applicants

Across all strands:

  • The lead applicant must be a UK-registered business
  • Projects must involve collaboration with at least one other UK organisation
  • Academic institutions cannot lead projects alone
  • Eligible collaborators include businesses, universities, charities, RTOs, public sector organisations and not-for-profits

Scope and Priority Areas

CMDC7 supports a wide range of clean maritime technologies and innovations, including:

  • Zero and near-zero emission fuel systems
  • Hydrogen, methanol and ammonia technologies
  • Electric vessel charging infrastructure
  • Shore power solutions
  • Smart shipping and autonomous systems
  • AI, digital twins and quantum-enabled maritime solutions
  • Energy efficiency technologies
  • Offshore and port decarbonisation infrastructure
  • Green shipping corridors

Priority is also given to projects supporting fishing vessels, inland waterways, retrofitting existing vessels, and integrated smart shipping technologies.
