Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure 2: Energy Efficiency

Opens:
26.03.2026
Closes:
16.09.2026
Sectors:
Marine and Maritime Research
Energy
Project Size:
£30 million

The Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure 2: Energy Efficiency competition is a significant funding opportunity designed to support the development, deployment and operation of clean maritime technologies in real-world environments. The programme focuses on improving vessel energy efficiency while contributing to the UK’s broader decarbonisation and net zero ambitions.

Unlike early-stage R&D calls, this competition is aimed at projects that are ready to demonstrate solutions at scale. Funded projects are expected to operate over a three-year period, validating performance, reliability and commercial viability in real maritime conditions.

Key dates

  • Opens: Thursday 26 March 2026
  • Closes: Wednesday 16 September 2026 (11:00am UK time)
  • Project start date: 1 April 2027

Funding amount

Each project can get up to £30 million with each participant getting no more than £20 million.

What your project must deliver

To be competitive, projects must demonstrate both innovation and practical application. This includes developing technologies that can be deployed and tested in real operational settings, with clear evidence of impact.

Your project should:

  • Develop innovative energy efficiency solutions for vessels
  • Integrate supporting infrastructure where required
  • Demonstrate technologies in a real-world maritime environment over three years
  • Deliver measurable reductions in emissions and fuel consumption
  • Present a clear pathway to commercialisation and market adoption

Projects that involve collaboration with ports, operators or infrastructure providers will be particularly strong, as they demonstrate real industry relevance and deployment potential.

Technology focus areas

This competition supports a wide range of technologies that improve maritime efficiency and reduce environmental impact. While the scope is broad, proposals should clearly demonstrate innovation and measurable outcomes.

Key areas include:

  • Hull optimisation and drag reduction technologies
  • Wind-assisted propulsion systems
  • Air lubrication and waste heat recovery solutions
  • Smart energy management and digital optimisation tools
  • Hybrid and integrated energy efficiency systems

Solutions should not only improve performance but also show scalability across fleets or maritime operations.

Who should apply

This is a collaborative funding opportunity aimed at UK-based organisations working across the maritime and innovation ecosystem.

Relevant applicants include:

  • Ship owners, operators and vessel manufacturers
  • Ports and maritime infrastructure providers
  • Engineering and clean technology developers
  • Research organisations and innovation partners

Projects must demonstrate strong collaboration and clear economic and environmental benefits to the UK.
