The GRAPPA Open Call is supporting European SMEs that can turn underused agri-food biomass and side-streams into commercially valuable products, ingredients, processes and technologies. With a total call budget of €2.02 million, GRAPPA aims to accelerate the development, adoption and commercialisation of biomass upcycling solutions while helping SMEs strengthen their position within European and global value chains.
Key Dates and Funding
Competition Opens: 26 March 2026
Competition Closes: 20 October 2026, 17:00 CET (2nd Cut-off)
Funding Available: Up to €60,000 for projects led by a single SME and up to €90,000 for collaborative projects involving multiple SMEs.
Applicants must provide a minimum 15% private financial contribution, using their own financial resources or debt, with evidence of this contribution required.
What is the GRAPPA Open Call?
The call focuses on agri-food biomass upcycling, supporting projects that maximise the value of biomass, by-products and side-streams that might otherwise be underutilised.
Projects must result in the implementation of a new process, product or service, or a combination of these, and must have reached at least Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6.
The opportunity extends beyond traditional agri-food businesses. It can also support SMEs in sectors such as cosmetics and nutraceuticals where their innovation uses or valorises agri-food biomass and side-streams.
What Types of Projects Can Be Supported?
The call covers the development, adoption and commercialisation of innovative solutions for food and non-food applications. This can include:

Who Can Apply?
Applications may be submitted by either a single SME or a consortium of up to three SMEs.
Eligible applicants include SMEs operating in agri-food production or processing, as well as businesses from other sectors that valorise their own biomass or use biomass originating from the agri-food sector. Technology providers developing solutions or processes for agri-food biomass valorisation can also apply.
Project Requirements
Applicants need to present a clearly defined innovation project with an estimated budget, expected results and impacts, and a credible commercialisation strategy.
Projects must also use the System Innovation Readiness Level (SIRL) assessment tool. Successful applicants will be required to participate in an in-person pitch presentation at the GRAPPA Summit during the 2nd European Food Biomass and Bioeconomy Summit in June 2027.
Importantly, applicants targeting the second cut-off should use the amended Cut-off 2 call documentation and application template, as requirements have changed since the first cut-off.
