Project Size:
Upto £1.5 million per project

Overview

Innovate UK has launched two complementary competitions under the Future Offshore Wind Technologies programme to support innovation across the offshore wind sector. Together, these competitions aim to strengthen the UK’s offshore wind supply chain, accelerate technology development and improve the commercial readiness of innovative offshore wind solutions.

The programme aligns with the Offshore Wind Industrial Growth Plan and supports businesses developing technologies for future fixed, floating and hybrid offshore wind systems. The competitions are split into two strands to support innovations at different stages of maturity:

  • Feasibility Studies for early-stage innovation and concept validation
  • Industrial Research for mid-stage development and commercialisation-focused projects

Both competitions are designed to help UK businesses scale innovative offshore wind technologies and build long-term manufacturing capability and competitiveness within the UK offshore wind market.

Feasibility Studies

The feasibility studies supports early-stage innovation projects focused on exploring new concepts, technologies and approaches within offshore wind.

Projects can focus on one or more of the following areas:

  • Advanced turbine technology
  • Industrialised foundations and substructures
  • Future electrical systems and cables
  • Smart environmental services
  • Next-generation installation, operations and maintenance technologies

Feasibility projects are intended to help businesses validate technical concepts, reduce innovation risk and prepare technologies for future industrial research and commercial deployment.

Industrial Research

The industrial research strand supports mid-stage offshore wind innovation projects that are progressing towards commercial deployment and industrial adoption.

Projects must focus on one or more of the following priority areas:

  • Offshore wind turbine blades and towers
  • Deepwater floating and hybrid foundation technologies
  • Future electrical systems and cable reliability solutions

The competition is particularly focused on innovations that can strengthen the UK offshore wind supply chain while creating a clear route to future commercial deployment and industrial scaling.
