Opportunity Overview:

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has opened a grant opportunity to revolutionise the development of future medicines. The program seeks to fund high-risk, high-reward projects that aim to solve bottlenecks in the medicines manufacturing pipeline, from discovery to deployment.

Objectives:

The funded studies should contribute to one or more of the following objectives:

  • Explore speculative translational pathways for medicines manufacturing.
  • Develop novel and sustainable approaches.
  • Investigate disruptive approaches to reduce time from discovery to deployment.
  • Consider manufacturability, including scale-up and user needs, from the outset.

Themes:

Proposals should focus on one or more of these themes:

  • New Modalities: Scalable, sustainable solutions and technologies.
  • Discovery: Techniques for improving drug screening success rates.
  • Analytical Capability: Techniques for predicting performance in clinic, discovery, and scale-up.

Environmental sustainability should be a key consideration in projects.

Eligibility:

  • Must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for EPSRC funding.
  • Projects can last up to two years.

Exclusions:

  • Equipment over £10,000 in value is not fundable.
  • Proposals related to vaccine research are not within the scope of this call.

Funding Limitation:

  • Full Economic Cost (FEC) of the project can be up to £187,500.
  • EPSRC will fund 80% of the FEC.
