The Commercialising Knowledge Assets Fund (CKAF) Autumn competition is designed to help UK public sector research organisations accelerate the commercial readiness of existing Knowledge Assets (KAs). The programme is delivered by the Government Office for Technology Transfer (GOTT), funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), and administered by Innovate UK.

The competition aims to bridge the gap between public sector innovation and commercial application by supporting projects that demonstrate a plausible market opportunity and a clear route towards exploitation in the UK.

Key Dates and Funding

Competition Opens: 18 May 2026

Competition Closes: 1 September 2026 at 11:00am UK time

Project Start Date: From 1 December 2026

Funding Available:

  • £50,000 to £250,000 per project
  • 100% of eligible project costs funded
  • Projects can last 6, 12, or 18 months

Scope of the Competition

The competition supports projects that move pre-existing Knowledge Assets towards commercial readiness.

A Knowledge Asset may include:

  • Intellectual property
  • Research and development outputs
  • Technical expertise and know-how
  • Source code
  • Creative outputs
  • Design rights

Projects must:

  • Demonstrate a credible commercial market opportunity
  • Be based on an existing identified Knowledge Asset
  • Show clear ownership and exploitation rights
  • Deliver project activities within the UK
  • Intend to commercialise results from or in the UK

The programme is technology agnostic and welcomes applications from all sectors.

Who Can Apply

Eligible lead organisations include:

  • Public Sector Research Establishments (PRSEs)
  • UKRI wholly owned institutes
  • Eligible public sector bodies undertaking research as a primary function

Projects must not involve organisations acting economically in a way that creates selective commercial advantage under Subsidy Control rules.

Why This Fund Matters

The UK public sector generates significant innovation, expertise, and intellectual property that often remains underutilised commercially. CKAF helps organisations transform these assets into scalable commercial opportunities that can create wider economic and societal value.

The competition supports the UK’s broader innovation and technology transfer strategy by helping public sector organisations build pathways to commercial impact.
