The ATI Programme Strategic Batch – September 2025 competition provides a route for organisations to put forward innovative aerospace research and development projects. The scheme is central to delivering the ATI’s vision of “Destination Zero,” supporting technologies that will enable the UK to lead in sustainable, ultra-efficient, and zero-emission aviation.

Key Dates

  • Opening date: 1 September 2025
  • Closing date: 17 September 2025 at 11am (UK time)
  • Stage: This call is for Expressions of Interest (EoI) only. Successful applicants will be invited to progress to the Full Stage (Phase 2).

Eligibility

  • The lead organisation must be UK-registered and carry out all project work in the UK.
  • Projects can be led by a business of any size for research projects, or by a business, RTO, research organisation, or academic for infrastructure projects.
  • Applicants may apply alone or as part of a consortium. Consortia may include UK-registered businesses, academic institutions, charities, not-for-profits, public sector bodies, or RTOs.
  • All partners must exploit the results in the UK and sign the ATI Framework Agreement.

Scope

Projects must align with the UK Aerospace Technology Strategy and fall within one of the following focus areas:

  • Zero-Carbon Emission Aircraft technologies (e.g. battery, hydrogen, fuel cell)
  • Ultra-Efficient Aircraft technologies
  • Cross-cutting Enabling technologies (design, manufacturing, lifecycle improvements)
  • Non-CO₂ technologies (fuel characteristics, emission mitigation)

Projects outside civil aerospace, early-stage experimental work, or those with primarily defence or space applications are ineligible.

Funding

  • Industrial Research: Up to 60% of eligible project costs, with a maximum of £18m per organisation. Rates vary by company size (70% small, 60% medium, 50% large).
  • Research organisations (non-economic activity): Can claim up to 30% of total project costs, funded at 100% (for RTOs, charities, public bodies) or 80% (for Je-S registered academics).
  • Capital Infrastructure Projects: Up to 50% of costs, capped at £18m per infrastructure project. Non-economic partners can claim 100% of their costs within set limits.

Assessment

EoIs are assessed by the ATI on eligibility, opportunity, and quality. If successful, applicants are invited to submit a Full Stage Application for consideration by the Department for Business and Trade.
