Mark Armitage
Scaleup Director

Mark has over 30 years of international and UK commercial experience, starting in export sales and graduating to senior management at the end of the first third of his career (Regional Managing Director - Africa, Middle East and South Asia with De La Rue). He has operated in over 80 countries across the Former Soviet Union, Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.

He has worked for PLCs, the UK Government’s Department for International Trade (now DBT), SMEs and start-ups as well as for a UK-registered global education charity.

He set up and ran his own management consultancy for 14 years. The company supported businesses in their internationalisation, supplying services for strategy development, market research, business planning as well as GTM activities. During this period, it assisted 400 companies (mainly SMEs but also some larger corporates) operating across multiple industry sectors (both profit and not for profit).

Sector agnostic, Mark is passionate about corporate strategy, business management and, more specifically, supporting firms in their internationalisation and GTM processes in the search for (UK and global) competitive advantage.

Mark has a degree in Russian (he also studied Czech and French at undergraduate level), an MBA and an MSc in Management Research.

He has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro three times, Mount Kenya twice and Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus. A lifelong love of squash means he is still to be found on court at least two or three times a week (stubbornly refusing to move to the dark side of padel or racquetball). He has three amazing grown-up daughters of whom he is immensely proud and who regularly drag him onto the hills and away from his beloved books.
