Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), is investing up to £3.425 million to support UK organisations in developing and demonstrating advanced quantum communication and networking technologies in collaboration with Canadian partners.

This competition aims to accelerate the commercialisation of secure quantum communications and build readiness for a joint UK-Canada satellite mission planned for 2027.

Scope

Projects must focus on terrestrial demonstrations of quantum communications or networking technologies that enable secure data exchange and connectivity, with approximately 80% of project activity dedicated to research, development, and performance evaluation.

The remaining 20% must focus on building preparedness for a satellite-based demonstration, contributing to the wider UK-Canada quantum partnership.

Eligible areas include:

  • Secure communications using quantum-enabled and related technologies
  • Entanglement distribution for non-security applications, such as blind quantum computing
  • Development of terrestrial infrastructure and testbeds, including satellite ground stations

Funding and Eligibility

  • Total funding available: up to £3.425 million
  • Individual project grant request: up to £3.425 million
  • Project duration: 30 to 36 months
  • Start date: from 1 April 2026, end by 31 March 2029
  • Lead applicant: UK-registered business of any size or academic institution
  • Consortium: must include at least one UK-registered SME claiming grant funding

Funding rates:

  • Up to 70% for small businesses
  • Up to 60% for medium-sized businesses
  • Up to 50% for large businesses
    Research organisations undertaking non-economic activity may claim up to 100% of eligible costs within a 30% cap of total project costs.
