Frontier AI: SME Champions, Phase 1 – Funding for Next-Generation AI Technologies

Opens:
01.10.2026
Closes:
11.11.2026
Sectors:
Digital, AI & Machine Learning
Defence & Security
Health & Life Sciences
Project Size:
£3.1 million

Artificial intelligence is transforming industries, creating opportunities for businesses to develop new products, improve operational performance and address complex technological challenges. However, developing genuinely novel AI technologies requires substantial research, technical validation and a clear strategy for commercialisation.

To support UK businesses working at the forefront of AI innovation, Innovate UK has launched the Frontier AI: SME Champions, Phase 1 competition, making up to £3.1 million available for early-stage feasibility and industrial research projects.

The competition aims to help UK-registered small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) validate ambitious AI and machine learning technologies capable of delivering significant performance improvements or enabling entirely new products, services and platforms.

Unlike funding programmes focused on adopting existing AI solutions, this competition prioritises fundamental technical novelty, defensible intellectual property and measurable advances beyond current state-of-the-art capabilities.

Key Dates and Funding

Opens: 1 October 2026

Closes: 11 November 2026, 11:00am UK time

Total Funding Available: £3.1 million

Eligible Project Costs: £150,000 to £250,000

Project Duration: 1 to 3 months

Funding Rate: Up to 70% for micro and small enterprises and 60% for medium-sized enterprises

Projects must start by 1 April 2027 and finish by 30 June 2027.

What Does the Programme Support?

The competition supports UK SMEs developing novel AI and ML technologies at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1 to 3.

Projects must focus on advancing AI capabilities rather than simply integrating existing AI tools into new applications.

The programme is particularly interested in innovations that demonstrate:

  • Technical novelty: Developing AI methodologies, architectures or capabilities that advance beyond existing technologies.
  • Measurable performance improvements: Demonstrating progress against clearly defined technical benchmarks and numerical targets.
  • Commercial potential: Addressing an identifiable market opportunity with customers and a credible business model.
  • Defensibility: Establishing competitive advantages through intellectual property, proprietary datasets, specialist expertise or other barriers to entry.
  • Scalability: Demonstrating a credible rationale for future technological and commercial scale-up.

Projects are not required to prove full scalability during Phase 1. Instead, they must establish that the underlying technology can work in principle and has the potential to scale.

Four Priority Themes

Applicants must select one main theme and identify a specific priority area that their proposed innovation addresses.

Theme 1: AI-Enabled Health and Life Sciences

This theme supports AI innovations capable of transforming healthcare, pharmaceutical research and life sciences.

Priority areas include:

  • Predictive healthcare
  • Medicines discovery
  • Medicines manufacturing optimisation
  • Genomics and multi-omics

Projects could involve developing advanced AI methodologies for predicting health outcomes, accelerating drug discovery, optimising pharmaceutical manufacturing or analysing complex biological datasets.

Theme 2: Advanced Materials with AI

This theme focuses on developing AI-driven capabilities across the materials research, development and innovation pipeline.

Priority areas include:

  • Materials prediction, generative models and multi-objective optimisation
  • Physics-informed ML models for discovery and accelerated simulation
  • Multimodal knowledge discovery platforms
  • Generalisable world models and data-efficient learning for materials processing and manufacturing scale-up
  • Open-set and uncertainty-aware models for materials characterisation and defect detection

Relevant applications may include aerospace, semiconductors, defence and net-zero technologies.

Theme 3: Secure AI for National Security and Defence

This theme supports the development of secure and resilient AI technologies for defence and national security applications.

It focuses on two priorities:

Advanced AI and Autonomous Decision Systems: AI-driven decision support, multi-source data fusion, hybrid AI architectures, causal reasoning and adaptive planning.

Resilient Edge Intelligence: AI technologies capable of operating in degraded, denied or contested environments, including low-power inference, neuromorphic technologies and advanced AI-enabled sensing.

Projects must demonstrate meaningful advances in AI capability rather than focusing primarily on hardware development.

Theme 4: AI Safety and Assurance Technologies

This theme supports technologies that improve the reliability, safety and verification of advanced AI systems.

Priority areas include:

  • Agentic runtime control and action assurance
  • Dynamic AI evaluation, simulation and safety testing environments
  • Formal and runtime verification for autonomous or safety-critical systems
  • Automated adversarial safety testing to identify previously unknown AI failures

The aim is to develop technical approaches that enable AI systems to be tested, controlled and verified against safety-related risks.

Who Can Apply?

The competition is open to UK-registered micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a UK-registered SME.
  • Undertake the funded project activities in the UK.
  • Intend to exploit the project results in the UK.
  • Spend the majority of the funding within the UK.
  • Submit only one application per organisation.
  • Propose a project with eligible costs between £150,000 and £250,000.

The competition does not permit subcontractors.

Applicants must also meet Innovate UK's financial eligibility requirements and demonstrate that their organisations are not in financial difficulty.

What Must Projects Deliver?

Phase 1 is designed to establish the technical feasibility of ambitious AI innovations.

Successful projects must deliver five key outputs.

1. Proof-of-concept prototype

A working proof of concept demonstrating the whole technology stack, core architecture or a critical subsystem.

2. Validation methodology

A clearly defined approach for testing the innovation against predefined technical benchmarks and measurable success criteria.

3. Evidence of technical novelty

Demonstration of how the proposed technology advances beyond existing AI capabilities or enables genuinely new functionality.

4. Scaling rationale

An explanation of how the technology and its associated business model could support future commercial growth.

5. Technical white paper

A document presenting the technical development, validation approach and findings generated during the project.

Applicants must also identify one key technical uncertainty that the project will address during Phase 1.

Synthetic or simulated datasets may be used where appropriate to demonstrate technical feasibility.

Why This Opportunity Matters

The Frontier AI: SME Champions competition provides an opportunity for UK SMEs to advance early-stage AI technologies that may otherwise struggle to secure funding because of their technical complexity and development risks.

By supporting focused feasibility projects, the programme enables businesses to validate critical technological assumptions, demonstrate novel capabilities and establish stronger foundations for future investment.

Its emphasis on intellectual property, technical benchmarking and commercial scalability also encourages applicants to consider how their innovations could create sustainable competitive advantages.

For SMEs developing genuinely novel AI technologies, Phase 1 funding could provide an important step towards transforming an early-stage technical concept into a commercially viable innovation.

How Inventya Can Help
