‍Farming Innovation Programme: Feasibility Round 4 – £4.8 Million Funding Open for UK Agricultural R&D

Opens:
13.10.2025
Closes:
03.12.2025
Sectors:
Agriculture
Project Size:
Up to £4.8 million

The Farming Innovation Programme, delivered by Defra in partnership with Innovate UK, supports innovative ideas that can transform the future of UK agriculture, horticulture, and forestry.
Round 4 of the Feasibility Competition focuses on early-stage projects that explore the potential of new technologies, systems, or practices to improve productivity and sustainability across the sector.

Funding Overview

  • Total competition funding: Up to £4.8 million.
  • Project size: Eligible total project costs must be between £200,000 and £500,000.
  • Funding type: Grant.
  • Project duration: Typically 6–18 months.

This funding is aimed at exploring feasibility — not full-scale implementation. Projects should identify challenges, test concepts, and generate the evidence needed for future larger R&D or demonstration projects.

3. Eligibility

To be eligible:

  • The lead organisation must be a UK-registered business (of any size).
  • Your project must benefit farmers, growers, or foresters in England.
  • The work must be carried out in the UK.
  • Collaboration is encouraged: projects can include research organisations, farmers, supply chain partners, or technology developers.

4. Scope & focus areas

The aim of this competition is to fund feasibility studies investigating new solutions that will address major on-farm or immediate post farmgate challenges or opportunities.

Your solutions must significantly improve:

  • productivity
  • resilience
  • sustainability and progression towards low emission farming

Your project must be able to demonstrate how the project will benefit farmers, growers or foresters in England.

Specific themes:

  • farmed animals
  • plants
  • novel food production systems
  • bioeconomy and agroforestry

5. Key dates

  • Opens: 13 October 2025
  • Closes: 3 December 2025, 11:00 am UK time

This is a key opportunity to de-risk new agricultural technologies before scaling up. By supporting feasibility studies, Innovate UK and Defra aim to help innovators validate their concepts, attract private investment, and pave the way for future large-scale demonstrator projects.

From precision robotics to soil health technologies, from crop management tools to climate-smart systems - Feasibility Round 4 supports the early stages of the ideas that could define the future of UK farming.
