Overview

The aim of this competition is to support UK businesses in exploring the feasibility of innovative ideas in semiconductor hardware. The goal is to strengthen the UK’s global position in critical technologies through advancements in design and fabrication.

Scope

Projects must focus on the feasibility of a hardware innovation with the potential to significantly benefit UK businesses in key technology areas. Feasibility studies should cover both technical and commercial aspects, highlight potential market opportunities, and identify any barriers to adoption.

Specific Themes

You can focus your project on one or more of the following areas:

  • Novel semiconductor materials or designs
  • Semiconductor fabrication techniques
  • Manufacturing equipment innovation
  • Multi-technology integration and interfacing
  • Advanced or novel packaging materials and techniques
  • Thermal management solutions
  • Front-end or back-end of line processes
  • In-line or end-of-line testing
  • Development of Process Design Kits (PDKs)

This list is not exhaustive—other innovative themes are welcome.

Project Duration

Projects must begin by 1 September 2025 and end by 28 February 2026
Project duration: up to 6 months

Funding Details

Grant request: Between £75,000 – £300,000

Funding Rates

Eligible project costs can be funded at the following rates:

  • Up to 70% for micro or small businesses
  • Up to 60% for medium-sized businesses
  • Up to 50% for large businesses

Research organisations can claim up to 30% of the total eligible project costs.

Eligibility

To apply, your project must:

  • Be led by a UK-registered business
  • Include at least one SME

Collaborators may include:

  • UK-registered businesses (any size)
  • Academic institutions
  • Charities or not-for-profit organisations
  • Public sector bodies
  • Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs)

Subcontractors are allowed, preferably UK-based, with clearly justified and reasonable costs.
