AUTOASSESS Open Call 2 for Tech Innovators

Opens:
02.03.2026
Closes:
05.05.2026
Sectors:
Marine and Maritime Research
Project Size:
Up to €150,000 per project

The AUTOASSESS Open Call #2 is part of a wider European programme aiming to transform how maritime inspections are carried out. Traditional inspection processes are costly, time-consuming and often hazardous, requiring human surveyors to work in confined and dangerous environments. AUTOASSESS addresses this by supporting the development of autonomous robotic systems capable of performing inspections more safely, efficiently and accurately.

This open call invites innovative technology providers to contribute solutions that enhance autonomous inspection capabilities, with a strong focus on real-world deployment and commercial impact.

What the programme is looking for

The call is designed to support advanced technology solutions aligned with specific challenges in maritime inspection.

Projects should:

  • Develop innovative technologies that support autonomous inspection of ships and offshore structures
  • Address one of eight defined technical challenges or propose a novel solution under the open challenge
  • Demonstrate strong alignment with real industry needs and operational use cases
  • Deliver solutions that can be tested and validated in realistic environments

The programme particularly encourages solutions in robotics, AI, sensor technologies, digital twins and data-driven inspection systems.

Key focus areas

Applicants can target a range of challenge areas including:

  • Autonomous robotic inspection and navigation in confined environments
  • Advanced sensing technologies for non-destructive testing
  • AI-driven defect detection and predictive maintenance
  • Digital twins and structural modelling of vessels
  • Remote inspection and augmented collaboration tools
  • User interfaces and mission control systems for inspection drones

There is also an open challenge option for solutions that address gaps within the AUTOASSESS ecosystem.

Eligibility and funding

The competition is open to high-potential startups and SMEs across Europe.

Key conditions include:

  • Applications can be submitted by a single entity or a consortium of up to two organisations
  • Applicants must be based in EU Member States or Horizon Europe associated countries
  • UK entities can participate but must secure their own funding

Selected projects will participate in a structured 9-month programme including development, integration and validation stages.

Key dates

Opens: 02 March 2026

Closes: 05 May 2026 (17:00 CET)

Programme start: July 2026

Funding structure

Up to €150,000 per project

Funding is provided as a lump sum and distributed across three stages:

  • 40% after planning phase
  • 40% after development and integration
  • 20% after final validation and demonstration

The programme will select approximately nine high-impact projects.
